Obituary of Delbert O. Roberts
Obituary Delbert Otress Roberts was born on Monday, January 8, 1940, in Shelbyville, Indiana to Carolyn Elizabeth Roberts and William "Bill" Brashear. Delbert was an only child. He attended the historic all-black elementary school Booker T. Washington in Shelbyville. He later attended Shelbyville Central Schools until his graduation from Shelbyville High School. Upon graduation, Delbert moved to Brooklyn, New York where he got one of his first jobs working for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). Delbert always had to have a job, he always had to have money in his pocket. It was a means for provision for those he cared about. He always wanted to provide for them. In March 1962 he was united in holy matrimony to Janie Ruth Edwards. Their marriage produced three children: Richie, Delbert "Jeff" and Carol. While working at the LIRR after many years of service, Delbert sustained a career-ending injury. He retired and moved back to Indianapolis, Indiana, circa 2006. Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, Carolyn Elizabeth Turner Roberts and Williams "Bill" Brashear. He leaves cherished memories with; two sons, Richie Roberts and Delbert Jeffrey Roberts (Nadine); one daughter, Carol Roberts Law (Tiffany); three grandchildren; a host of other special relatives and friends including special cousin, Toni Gray (Louis). Service will be held 12:00 pm, Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at Williams and Bluitt Funeral Home Peoples' Chapel, 5252 E. 38th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, with visitation from 10:00 am until time of service at 12:00 pm, all taken place at Williams and Bluitt Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Sutherland Park Cemetery, 4201 Millersville Road, Indianapolis, Indiana.
