Harrison R. Jahn

JAHN, Harrison Richard Kurt, died October 30, 2017 surrounded by his family. Harrison was born in Geneva, New York on September 6, 1930 to the late Herman O. and Paula H. Jahn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only brother, Gunter P. Jahn. He is survived by his wife, Tommie L. Jahn, by son Richard T. Jahn of Palmyra, VA a grandson, Ryan; by son Terry A. Jahn and his wife Lorna, a grandson, Kyle and granddaughter, Jessica; by son Jeffrey K. Jahn and his wife, Sharon, a granddaughter Amanda and two grandsons, Tyler and Matthew of Richmond, VA Harrison spent most of his working life in the field of higher education. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Master in Economics from Cornell University in 1952. On that same date he was commissioned an Ensign in the United States navel Reserve and received orders to active duty. He served for two years as an officer on oil tankers – U.S.S. Kennebel (TAO-36) and U.S.S. Severn (AO-61). From 1954 until 1960 he worked for American Brake Shoe Company as an accountant in their offices in New York City and Chicago, IL. During this time period he took Graduate courses in business at New York University and received his Masters of Business Administration Degree with a Major in Accounting in 1957. In 1960 he left industry and returned to Cornell University to earn his PHD in the fields of Finance, Accounting and Economics. He was a member of the faculty in the economics department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, from 1962 until 1986. He also held several temporary administrative positions during his tenure there – as Assistant Dean and Acting Dean of Hobart College for a year, as controller for 4 years and as acting treasurer for 20 months. In October 1986, he and his wife, Tommie, moved to Hickory, N.C. where he was a member of the faculty in the Dept of Business at Lenoir-Rhyne College from 1988 until his retirement in 1998. They moved to Glen Allen, VA in 2011. He was a member of Overbrook Presbyterian Church, a member of The Hickory Kiwanis Club and back in 1946 in Geneva, N.Y. he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The Memorial service will be held at Overbrook Presbyterian Church on November 11, 2017 at 10:00AM.
