Mary Patterson

Mary Patterson passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 in Norfolk. Mary was born in Puerto Rico to the late Jose Corales and Ramona Lugo Corales. She moved to Norfolk, VA around the age of 19 where she eventually met and married the love of her life, Jerry Patterson. She retired from Norfolk Public Schools where she worked in the cafeteria at Norview High School. Mary was a faithful 3rd grade Sunday school teacher at Norview Baptist Church for many years. For the last 20+ years, she bravely and graciously fought Alzheimer’s Disease. Affectionately called Mima, her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Her smile and laughter were infectious. The joy, sweetness and deep faith that Mary possessed will always be a source of inspiration to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter Ginney Freeman and husband Keith of Chesapeake; daughter Nancy Smith and husband Jeff of Norfolk; Grandchildren Colby Umagat and husband Ben, Marissa Freeman, and Dylan Freeman; and Great Grandson Hendrix Umagat. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 54 years, Jerry Patterson. Thank you to all of Mary’s friends and neighbors for the care and support you provided to her and for the precious time spent with her over the years. There will be a memorial service on March 10, 2017 at 1:00PM at Churchland Baptist Church in Chesapeake. A reception will follow in the social hall.
