Widely known as Dr. Attar and famously called “AJ”, Dr. Amir James Attar passed away on Monday, July 14, leaving behind a legacy of intellect, invention, and deep devotion to his family.
Born with a remarkable mind and an insatiable curiosity, Dr. Attar was an exceptional student of chemistry who became an accomplished chemical engineer, passionate inventor, and visionary entrepreneur. After a successful tenure as a professor at NC State University, he chose to follow his entrepreneurial spirit full-time, calling Raleigh, North Carolina, his home and the hub of his many ventures.
Dr. Attar was a man of boundless ideas and bold pursuits—always pushing limits, always imagining what might be possible. He loved to travel and delighted in international cuisine, famously able to recall every meal he ever enjoyed in every country he visited. But above all, his greatest joy and pride came from his family—especially his beloved grandchildren.
He is survived by his brother, Meir; his partner, Ilana; his sons, Eyal (married to Leslie) and Ron (married to Melissa); and his cherished grandchildren: Talia and Avi (children of Eyal), and Rachel, David, Emily, and Adam (children of Ron).
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 Millbrook Road, Raleigh, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Anti-Defamation League at support.adl.org (https://support.adl.org/).
