Obituary of Lonnie Dunlap McKinney Jr.
McKinney, Lonnie D., Jr. (Buckie), age 87, passed away in his home in Richmond, Virginia after a long illness surrounded by his family. He was born November 10, 1931 in Richmond to Lonnie and Helen Leiss McKinney. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joyce McKinney Miller; and grandson, William Christopher Sellers. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Roberts McKinney; son, Michael W. McKinney (Janice); daughter, Karen McKinney Sellers (William); granddaughters, Stephanie Sellers Wortman (Steven) and Lonnie “Katie” Sellers Michalski (Adam); granddaughter-in-law, Jessica Decker Sellers; and five great granddaughters, Seren, Harley, Avery, Parker, and Charlie, all of Marietta, Georgia; sister, Helen McKinney Newcomb (Jim); brother-in-law, Melvin C. Miller; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Buckie graduated from John Marshall High School in the class of 1950. While there, he played football and was in the Cadet Corps, F Company. He was also Captain of Second Battalion. After graduation he served in the United States Marine Corps. He later became a plumber with J.H. Chappell Company, owned McKinney Plumbing and Heating and retired as President of J.H. Chappell Company. He enjoyed playing handball for many years at the YMCA and enjoyed coaching his son’s teams at Tuckahoe Little League. Playing golf was one of his favorite past times in recent years. He was a longtime member of Skipwith United Methodist Church. He is a former usher and served on the Building and Grounds Committee for many years and played on the church’s first softball team. The family will receive friends at Woody Funeral Home – Parham Chapel on Monday, May 13, 2019 from 4-6 PM, where a service will be held on Tuesday, May 14 at 10 AM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Skipwith United Methodist Church.
