I am Vera and This is My Story
I was born December 5, 1927 in Highgate, Jamaica. I was the 5th daughter of 7 girls. Most of my sisters have passed now and I only have one sister left living in Montreal. I did spend some time visiting Jamaica over the years when my family was still there. Now I just have one niece left there. I was married to Raymond when we were still in Jamaica. Together we chose to take on a big adventure and immigrate to Canada.
When my husband and I first moved to Canada in 1954, we lived in Montreal. I really liked living there, although the language barrier became the deciding factor in our move to Toronto. A decade after our arrival to Montreal, the FLQ (Quebec Liberation Front) became active and speaking English in the city felt as though it was becoming dangerous. The move to Toronto was a big decision but Toronto turned out to be a beautiful city.
I found work in Toronto, in a law office, and was eventually promoted to Law Clerk. I really felt I made a difference to the clients that I served there. They would sometimes let me know through gifts or at times through lasting friendships after all the hard work was done.
Raymond and I had two children, one daughter and one son. Tragically, we lost our son as a young adult. Our daughter lives in Pickering, and has a good job working in property management. She has three sons, and two grandchildren.
I have always loved crafting. I would keep busy doing and learning any new crafts. For a time, my favorite was fashion dolls. I would make these from scratch including all their clothes, stuffing and faces. My daughter still has one I made for her. Now I keep myself busy colouring and knitting.
I enjoy living at Lakeview Manor. I moved here from another home in south Durham and when they gave me the opportunity to move back I decided I would stay here. I recently became the president of the Resident Council and so far I enjoy it.
