Obituary of Frederic Bannister Gaudern

IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Williamsburg

Frederic Bannister Gaudern, aged 76, passed away at his home in Williamsburg on January 9, 2020, of natural causes. Born to Margaret and Richard Gaudern on June 24, 1943, Fred grew up in Baldwinsville, New York, and completed K through high school there before entering Syracuse University. Owner of Gaudern Construction, Fred worked as a general contractor for 32 years, much of that time in California. He was an excellent carpenter and admired the many types of architecture found in Virginia. His love of history and his interest in the Historic Triangle prompted Fred to relocate from San Diego to Williamsburg in 2001, and in 2010, he designed and built his home here. Fred enjoyed playing lacrosse and ultimately became a lacrosse referee. He continued as an avid fan, watching the sport on the internet. He also enjoyed rowing, especially on Mission Bay in San Diego, and served as a volunteer with the Crew Classic every year. He is survived by his “best friend” of 35 years, Cathy Swormstedt; his daughter, Carey Gaudern and son-in-law, Dan Gezelter of South Bend, Indiana; grandchildren, Zoe and Jonah; and sisters Martha Wheaton of Massachusetts, and Susan Lott of Maine. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heritage Humane society where Fred adopted his beloved beagle, Mary, or to the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.
