Catherine "Kitty" Katinas Canard

Catherine Katinas Canard passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at the age of 98 years, with her loving family by her side. Born March 17, 1923 in Washington, D.C. and raised by her parents, immigrants from Naxos, Greece. The second of seven children. First and foremost, her family was her foundation, greatest love and passion. A devoted daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother and YiaYia. She nicknamed herself "Kitty" when she was a teen, after the strong influence of a character played by Ginger Rogers, which stuck throughout her long life. She raised 4 children on her own, was blessed with 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Everyone who knew her loved her & immediately had a supportive friend for life. Her life motto: "It's better to know than to have", values instilled from her mother. She was a hard worker and often worked 7 days a week to support her family, doing many jobs to pay the bills, and give her family the best possible life. She enjoyed her work as a secretary, seamstress, housekeeper, county clerk, notary public, and waitress at her brother's restaurant. She was dedicated to all of her jobs, creating the work ethic that made her a stand out in all she did. She had the determination to learn and accomplish anything she set her mind to. She was our biggest cheerleader, attending all family events, loved to dance, sing, and joyfully crochet baby blankets for each new arrival, made curtains for everyone's house, and baked the best pastitsio and kourambiedes on the planet. She always had a sweet treat waiting for her grandkids, and as secret stash of her own. She will be sorely missed by her family. She lived the last 4 years of her life at the Gardens at Fair Oaks, Virginia, where the staff became an extended part of her family, and where she became a friend and second mother to many. She will remain in our hearts forever. She will remain in our hearts forever, eternal be her memory. A visitation for Catherine will be held Friday, March 26, 2021 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Murphy Funeral Homes, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22203. A visitation will occur Saturday, March 27, 2021 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, 3149 Glen Carlyn Rd, Falls Church, VA 22041. A funeral service will follow from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, 3149 Glen Carlyn Rd, Falls Church, VA 22041. Graveside rites will occur Saturday, March 27, 2021 from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Blvd, Arlington, VA 22201. A family lunch will follow the interment at Pan Am Restaurant, in Fairfax, VA.
