Sara Myrtis Voegler

Sara M. Parks Voegler was born in Lincolnton, GA, January 1, 1924, the youngest of ten children. Her father William Brooks Parks, died when she was 12 years old. Her mother, Lanie Wright Parks, continued to raise her children in Georgia and encouraged Sara to attend business school after graduating from high school, then allowed her youngest child to move to Washington, D.C. to work for the government to support the war effort. When she moved to Washington, D.C. in 1942, Sara and her best friend and roommate, Nell Shehane, also from Georgia, soon joined Second Baptist Church of Washington, D.C. It was there that they made lifelong friends and Sara met her future husband, Walter Voegler. During a weekend pass from the Navy, Walter and Sara were married May 27, 1944 in Washington, D.C. Sara moved in with her mother-in-law, Ruth Shreve Voegler, while Walter was serving in the Pacific during WWII. They moved to Arlington, VA in 1947 to raise their family. Sara worked part-time for Kann’s department store as a bookkeeper, then joined the Northern Virginia Board of Realtors as an accountant. She worked there for over twenty years until she joined Walter in retirement when they were 56 years old. Sara enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, traveling, shopping, mystery novels, rocking on the porch at Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., playing card games on her computer, and spending the winters in Naples, Florida. Sara was blessed with many God given gifts of faith, grace, patience, generousity, and hospitality. She tirelessly prepared food to take to the sick. One of her specialties, and was requested often, was pimento cheese sandwiches. Until recently, she hosted family Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas dinners. She was a Sunday School teacher, served on various church committees including serving on one of the Wednesday night cooking teams, and choir member. Sara sang in church choirs for over 65 years. The most important things in her life were the love of and faith in God, and the love for her family.
