Elizabeth "Betty" Mitchel, age 88, of Carmel, Indiana passed away on Monday, February 8, 2021. Elizabeth was born May 19, 1932 to Earl and Enid Gilchrist in Indianapolis. Betty was a resident of Indianapolis, as well as Carmel and Zionsville. She was a graduate of Shortridge High School class of 1950. She attended Hanover College and graduated from IU School of Dental Hygiene in 1953. She was a clinical instructor at IU School of Dentistry until her marriage to John (Jack) R. Keck on September 1, 1956. She volunteered in Carmel schools serving as PTO president and on Curriculum Board during Dr. Robert Hartman's tenure. Betty moved to Zionsville in 1972 where she worked for 13 years as a dental hygienist for Don Spees, DDS. She then went on to head the eye testing program for Psi Iota Xi and later volunteered for many years at Zionsville Presbyterian Church where she was a member. After the death of her husband Jack, Betty married Thomas L. Mitchel. They enjoyed traveling. She volunteered at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Church where she converted to Catholicism. She also volunteered for Right to Life of Indianapolis. She loved golf playing for many years at Country Club of Indianapolis and in Florida. Betty was an avid reader. Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Keck; son, Robert Keck; and brothers Dick Gilchrist and Bob Gilchrist. She is survived by husband, Thomas L. Mitchel; sons Dave (Lynn) and Jack; stepson, Aaron (Cathy); stepdaughters Sara (Bill); Sister Margaret Mary, OSF and Theresa (John); 3 granddaughters, Courtney (Chris), Hannah and Danielle; 6 step grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Friday, February 12 from 10-11am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 14598 Oak Ridge Rd., Carmel, Indiana 46032. A private family burial will immediately follow at Zionsville Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to St. Jude Cancer Center or American Red Cross.
