Beloved wife and mother Kay DeYoung Brown, 84, passed away February 10, 2018 under the care of Hospice of the Piedmont while residing at Our Lady of Peace. She was predeceased by her Father David DeYoung, her mother Elizabeth and her step father Ray Chaffin. She was survived by her son David Palmer, and her sister Carolyn Scisci in Belton South Carolina, cousins Marion G. Gravely and her husband Richard Jackson of Charlottesville VA and James M. Gravely and his wife Carey M Gravely of Lynchburg, VA. Kay was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. After her family moved to Charlottesville she attended and graduated from Lane High School in1951. After graduation, Kay enrolled in the UVA School of Nursing. After graduation in 1954, Kay was commissioned in the Air Force Nurse Corps in 1955 and had a very interesting career. She was stationed at Andrews AFB, MD, Parks AFB , California, Tachikawa AFB, Japan, Wiesbaden AFB, Germany and McGuire AFB, New Jersey. After returning to Charlottesville she worked as a psychiatric nurse at David C Wilson hospital and retired after it became Charter Hospital. Kay married the late John S Palmer and had a son, David Scott Palmer of Charlottesville. After John’s passing, Kay married David L Brown in June 1989 in Charlottesville where they lived at their house in Ivy. David and Kay enjoyed various activities together, including singing in choirs, attending Symphony concerts, vocal concerts and UVA women’s basketball games as well as bowling. Kay and David enjoyed traveling abroad with friends from Broadus Memorial Baptist Church and an occasional cruise. Kay obtained a general class amateur radio license and along with David enjoyed providing ham radio emergency communications for various charitable events such as bike races. Kay and David were truly soul mates for nearly 29 years. The family is grateful for the excellent and loving care given to Kay by Our Lady of Peace and the Hospice of the Piedmont. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, Hospice of the Piedmont or your favorite charity. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 am Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, 1525 Stony Point Road, Charlottesville, VA. Interment with military honors will follow at Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, February 16, 2018 at Teague Funeral Home.
