Ann M. Myers, 79, of Fort Wayne, Ind., passed away March 16, 2021 after a brave battle with lymphoma and dementia. She was preceded in death by her father Harold Vernon Hester, mother Mary Bernice Hester as well as five beautiful cats, Mittens, Buddy, Catrina, Charlotte and Cody. She is survived by her loving and loyal son, Ron Myers (Carly) and sister Janet Flohr (Steve), along with her beloved feline companions Gypsy, Socrates, Smudge, Shadow and Amelia.
Most of us never have the privilege of knowing and being loved by a person like Ann. She embodied kindness and love like no other. When you had a conversation with her, it was a judgement free zone with nothing but support and sweet words about your strengths and abilities. She was someone who lifted others up.
Ann did not have bad days. She did not complain. She did not gossip or criticize. She was a gentle soul who was generous with her time and the modest resources she had. Ann was a positive force in this world that you rarely see.
She spent almost 30 years as the manager of Dairy Queen on East State Boulevard and in the final years of her career at the Maplewood location. Many regulars would return weekly to see her, exchange a chat about life and receive the perfectly made sundae, Blizzard or signature curly-Q topped cone. Smiling, greeting and serving the public was important to her, and she completed her job with an unparalleled work ethic.
Her greatest gift was her dedication to and love for her son. Whether it was time spent helping him with his paper route as a youth, offering words of encouragement as he started his business, dining with him at Pizza King or at El Azteca or their 50 trips to Indianapolis for her cancer treatments, they had an unbreakable bond that many are not fortunate to have.
Ann appreciated the small but significant moments and luxuries in life: watching Jeopardy, basketball or baseball, playing scrabble with friends, scoring finds at garage sales to add to her collections of ephemera, enjoying sweet treats, tending to flowers and landscaping and basking in the sun of a lovely summer day. Ann never missed a fourth of July fireworks show. She loved connecting with others as evidenced in the many years she corresponded with international pen pals. In the last 20+ years of her life, Ann became the ultimate nurturer to her rescued cat companions.
Anyone who was loved by Ann knows that we have lost a true angel.
A heartfelt thanks to the dedicated care of the hospice team at Parkview Randallia. They offered attentiveness, guidance and support that will never be forgotten.
Ron asks that in lieu or flowers or gifts that memorials be made in Ann’s name to Humane Fort Wayne (formerly known as Allen County SPCA) and Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana. For online condolences, please visit www.advantagehighlandpark.com.
