Withyawuth Willie Hong (aka Willie Hong), age 65, of Washington, DC, passed peacefully on Friday, August 28, 2020. A proud Army veteran, he served from 1979 to 1984. Awards given to Willie included his Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon and Army Good Conduct Medal, and while stationed at 3rd Cavalry Regiment in Fort Bliss: Soldier of the Week, Soldier of the Month, Runner-Up for Soldier of the Year and his promotion to E-5. Other awards included the President's Medal for Distinguished Service from the Freedom's Foundation and the Outstanding Handicapped Federal Employee. Following his Army service, he continued as a humble servant in the veteran's community by assisting, providing and supporting other active service members, veterans, their families, and the homeless population by sharing his knowledge and information on how to get different types of assistance from a variety of organizations for their particular needs. Survived by his sisters Dawy Hong and Vathana Hong Phiev of Paris, France; Vira Hong, of Washington, DC; Lydia Hong Cochran of Frederick, MD; nephews Vlady Vy; Christopher Vy and his son Micah Kuna Vy; niece Stephanie Vy and her daughter Serena Path. Preceded in death by his mother Amra Peo Um Hong; his father His Excellency, Dr. Doeung Hoeung Hong, Cambodia Ambassador in Amman, Jordan, and previously part of the diplomatic corps in Paris, France; Rangoon, Burma, and in Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Hong served in the United Nations for many years traveling worldwide, playing an active role in all historical conferences promoting peace, prosperity and human rights to the world (The Paris Peace Treaty, Geneva Conferences, La Hague and United Nations). Dr. Hong’s son, Withyawuth (Willie) Hong was the maternal grandson of Dr. Peo Um from the Kingdom Cambodia from which Peo Um School still stands today. Military Memorial Ceremony honors and interment for Withyawuth (Willie) Hong will be at Quantico National Cemetery on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 1:30pm at the Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Veterans Organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project, to “A Kidney for Vlady” 4201 Butterworth Place NW, Suite 646, Washington, DC 20016, or to this service organization: Catholic Charities (https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/).
