From Hartshorne, Oklahoma
Gerald Don “Skelly” Skellenger, a proud U.S. Navy veteran, passed away on November 8, 2025, at El Camino Hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He was 96.
At just sixteen, Skelly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, beginning a lifelong devotion to service that he valued deeply. He retired with distinction as a Mess Management Specialist First Class (E-6), known for his “can do” spirit and his ability to handle any job set before him. Throughout his service, he exemplified the highest standards of character and professionalism—earning the respect of his peers and setting an example for those who served alongside him. His dedication and excellence were recognized through five Good Conduct Awards, the National Defense Service with Bronze Star, and honors for service in China, the Japanese Occupation, Korea, the United Nations, World War II Victory, the Armed Forces Expeditionary for Vietnam, and American Defense Operations.
He was well known among his shipmates for his skill and determination—both in his duties and in the ring, where he proved himself a tenacious and spirited boxer.
In his final naval assignment with the U.S. Navy’s Construction Battalions—better known as the Seabees—he was recognized for his outstanding service to ACB-1, Western Pacific Detachment.
After retiring from the Navy, Skelly worked as Food Service Supervisor at O’Connor Hospital and Alexian Brothers Hospital, and as Security Officer at Regional Medical Center.
In later years, Skelly enjoyed visiting family and friends in Oklahoma and Kansas. He also embraced his artistic side through book coloring, loved watching football, keeping up with the news, and listening to country music. Above all, he cherished spending time with his devoted wife and his affectionate, playful dog, Sippu, who was never far from his side.
He will be best remembered for his strength—both in body and mind—his humor, kindness, and cheerful smile.
Skelly is survived by his loving and loyal wife, Nory, and his faithful companion, Sippu.
A memorial service will be held on December 7 at Lima Family Milpitas–Fremont Mortuary, followed by interment at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery on December 8.
