Lawrence D. “Smitty” Smith, 72 of Huntington passed away at 2:11 am on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at his residence. Larry was a 1964 graduate of Milan High School in Milan, Michigan and was a 1968 graduate of Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan, earning his bachelor’s degree in marketing. He worked for 39 years in pharmaceutical sales at the Pfizer Company, retiring in 2008. Larry had played semi-pro hockey in Indianapolis for two years. He loved fly fishing and tying flies. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Delta Sigma Phi, social fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, professional business fraternity-NMU charter member, American Marketing Association, Sons of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Loyal Order of the Moose, Huntington County Ducks Unlimited where he was the first area chairman, National Wild Turkey Federation, Trout Unlimited, Three Rivers Fly Fishers, Federation of Fly Fisherman and was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was born on October 11, 1946 in Auburn, New York, the son of John and Marie (Skelton) Smith. He was united in marriage to Jeanne Yurnikl on January 27, 1968 in Blissfield, Michigan. His wife survives. Additional survivors include a daughter: Amy Wheeler of Angola; a son: Matthew Smith of Traverse City, MI; a sister: Joy Holley of Saline, MI; his mother: Marie Pilbeam of Saline, MI and three grandchildren: Matthew Wheeler, Maria Wheeler and Elizabeth Wheeler. He was preceded in death by his father. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 7, 2018 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm with recitation of the rosary at 7:00 pm at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, Indiana. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 11:00 am with one hour of visitation prior to the service at the St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington with Father Stephen Colchin officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Beech Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made out to Cancer Services of Huntington County in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
