Former Liberty resident, Gary T. Moon, 82, died February 2, 2019, at the Masonic Home in Springfield, Ohio. Gary was born August 18, 1937 in Lakewood, Ohio, the only child of Leon and Josephine Olive Thomas Moon. Gary was a 1957 graduate of Kent State High School in Kent, Ohio. Later that year, he entered the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS Midway as a Fire Control Technician Second Class. Gary moved to the Cincinnati area to work for Cincinnati Milling Machine Company. His love of drama led him to the Colerain Music-Drama Club as an actor, director and office holder. In the early 70s, he moved to Liberty where he owned and operated the Western Auto Store. He later retired in 2006 as an independent manufacturers’ representative in home furnishings. Gary was a collector of firearms as a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed conducting shooting seminars for the Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Liberty Presbyterian Church. A lifelong member of the Liberty American Legion Post #1472, member of the Liberty Lodge #58, F. & A.M and a dedicated volunteer with the Liberty Fire Department. In his leisure time, Gary made scale replicas of real towns to accompany his Lionel train collection. He volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and was an avid photographer. Gary is survived by his children and their spouses: Robbi Moon and Bob Weisbrodt of Goshen, Ohio; Lesli Hopping and Mike of Cincinnati, Ohio; Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Moon and Dr. Gesa of Springfield, Virginia; two grandsons, Leon and Noah Moon. Gary is preceded into death by his parents. Memorial Masonic and funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday February 6, 2019 at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, Liberty. Interment will follow in West Point Cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion, Post #122 and VFW, Post #1472. Friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made at the funeral home to the Liberty Masonic Lodge or American Legion Post #1472.
