Alice Proffitt Dawson

Alice Proffitt Dawson, 96, of Altavista, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. Born on October 6, 1927 to Sadie Ray Brown and Clinton Lansford Proffitt, she was fourth in the birth order of 12 siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her children; Lewis O. “Butch” Wood (Phyllis), Faye W. Stewart (Vernon), Nancy D. Wilkerson (Donnie), Dale D. Nichols (Greg), Robbie Dawson (Liz) and Leslie Dawson (Michelle); 10 grandchildren, Lewis O. Wood III (Courtney), Wendy Parrish (Sam), Russ Wood (Mary), Ashley Moore (Robert), Abby Eubank (Jeremy), Amanda McGovern (Nate), Allison Nichols (Stacey), Garrett Dawson (Madison), Arron Dawson (Justin) and Ryan Dawson (Emily); 13 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Grace Forbes, Shirley Cash, Ealane Johnson (John), Margaret Proffitt and one brother, Wayne Proffitt (Bettylou). Alice retired from Sears Roebuck and Co. after 35 years of service and was a member of First Baptist Church in Altavista. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Bentley Commons and Bedford Hospice House for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Alice. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no visitation or service.
