Penelope Joy Huizinga, 21, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2022, after living with many complex medical issues. True to her fighting spirit, she gave us several more years to be with her than expected. She is already tremendously missed by surviving members of the family including her father and mother, Paul and Maureen Huizinga, her sisters, Sarah (Joseph), Fanny, Julia, Rosie, Trish and Nora as well as her brothers Nathaniel, Iain, Thomas, Joshua and Greyson, her maternal grandfather Winston Wright, paternal grandmother Myrtle Huizinga, and her uncles Timothy Wright, Eric (Brittney) Wright, Mackenzie (Amanda) Wright, Steve (Patty) Huizinga and Michael (Kimberly) Huizinga & many cousins. Penelope was greeted in heaven by her biological parents, grandfather Gerrit Huizinga, grandmother Virginia Wright, and brothers Ethan and Gavin who preceded her into Glory. Penelope, aka Penny, came to our family through adoption. As a family we had been praying for children to be connected to families that we saw on Reeces Rainbow. Penny was one of those children and we kept seeing her that she was not getting a family. Our Heavenly Father prompted our spirits that we were to be her family. Penny’s adoption was complete and she came home from Bulgaria in February 2014 and she famously became the 1000th child adopted through Reece’s Rainbow once she landed in the US. Penny brought joy to all those who she met. Penny loved music and animals. Many thanks to all the special people Penny was privileged to know on her journey through life. Penny was a fighter and victorious over several medical challenges. We greatly appreciate the many doctors and nurses at VCU Medical Center hospital pediatrics will be especially remembered for their kindness and caring that improved quality of life. A celebration of life gathering is planned for October 1, 2022 at 3pm at Hanover Evangelical Friends Church in Mechanicsville, Virginia. All are welcome to attend to share memories and visit with one another as we remember our precious girl. A potluck will follow. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to honor Penny with a charitable donation, the charities of the family's choice are: Reece’s Rainbow https://reecesrainbow.org/ Richmond Animal and Control Center (RACC) https://www.raccfoundation.org/ A private graveside service will be held at the family farm in Pennsylvania. Appreciation to Woody Funeral Home-Atlee Chapel for assisting the family with arrangements. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.woodyfuneralhomeatlee.com for the Huizinga family.
