James Everette Long Sr.

Mr. James Everette Long, Sr. of Verona, died Wednesday, December 01, 2010. He was 91. Mr. Long was born January 13, 1919 in Clover Hill, VA, the son of the late James Elmer and Ethel Smith Long. He was an active member of Verona United Methodist Church for 70 years. He served his country as a member of the United States Army in World War II. He retired from E. I. DuPont De Nemours and Company after 40 years of service. On April 6, 1939 he married the former Virginia Andrews who preceded him in death on Feb. 16, 1997. He is survived by a son, James E. Long, Jr. and wife, Doris, of Verona; a daughter, LuAnn L. Gingerich and husband, Brian of Covington; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn H. Long of Staunton; 6 grandchildren, Penny Von Drake (Dennis) of Harrisonburg; Lisa Long of Bridgewater; Rhonda Danner (Chuck) of Grottoes; Brad Long (Christina) of Swoope; Robert Gingerich (Bethany) of Madison, Wisconsin; and Barton Gingerich of Purcellville, VA; and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are one sister, Louise Stover of Richmond; three brothers, Truman Long and wife, Jeanne of Camden, SC; Norman Long and wife, Maxine of Indianapolis, Ind.; and Wayland Long and wife Peggy of Clover Hill; a sister-in-law, Betty Long of Harrisonburg and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Bruce Long in 1986 and a daughter, Emma Elaine Long in 1957; a brother, Galen Long, a sister, Geneva Whitmore and two brothers-in-law, Harry Whitmore and Garnett Stover. A graveside service will be held at ten o’clock Saturday morning, Dec. 4, in the Verona United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev Matthew Bates officiating. The family will receive friends at the Church following the graveside service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Verona United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.
