Mrs. Rebecca Walker Saufley Early, 96, a resident of Kings’ Daughter’s Nursing Home in Staunton, and formerly of Weyers Cave, passed away on Monday, December 06, 2010. She was born on July 5, 1914 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Luther and Myrtle Van Lear Saufley. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to all. Mrs. Early graduated from Weyers Cave High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of Weyers Cave United Methodist Church where she held numerous positions, and was also a member of the Weyers Cave Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her husband, Ward O. Early, preceded her in death on May 21, 1991, a son, Douglas Early also preceded her in death. She is survived by three children, Donald Early and wife, Delcie of Staunton, Daniel Early and wife, Maggie of Stuarts Draft, and Gail Sykes and husband, Archie of Richmond; five grandchildren, Kathy Early Mayz of Staunton, Christopher Early of Germany, Roderick Early of Staunton, Stuart Early of Florida, and Brandon Early of Weyers Cave; four great-grandchildren, Kara and Travis Mayz, Jennifer and Brianna Early; two step-great-grandchildren, Aimee and Ashley Gajus, and one step-great-great-granddaughter, Starlyn Gajus; numerous nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Jean Bazzarae, Mary Kay Hoffman, and Becky Hiner; also Linda Fillinger, who is thought of as a daughter by the Early family. In addition to her husband and son, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Virgie Leavel, Mary Miller, Lertie, Theodore, William, Frank, and Luther “Buck” Saufley. The family will receive friends 7-9:00 PM, Wednesday, December 8, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave. A funeral service will be held at the Chapel of the funeral home, 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 9, with Pastor Peggy Packard officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Weyers Cave.
