He was the son of Carl and Leatha Salyers, born in Bloomington, Indiana on January 1, 1947. A United States Marine and decorated Vietnam War veteran, he served his country with honor and bravery - earning the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat while defending the freedoms we hold dear. He worked as a US Postal Service Worker until his retirement. Robert loved his two daughters, three grandchildren, brothers and sisters and all his family. He enjoyed acquiring cars, collecting firearms and coins, supporting charitable foundations, watching movies and tv shows, reading and researching his passions and keeping up with his family. As a Dad and a Grandfather, Robert was always available for a visit and to chat, to offer his hard-earned wisdom or a listening ear. Robert’s life, his passions and courage, both on the battlefield and throughout his life, will never be forgotten. We honor his memory by continuing to pursue the things we love.
Robert is survived by his two Daughters, Shani Salyers Stiles and Jenny (Brian) Hinkle; Two Grandsons, Owen Robert Stiles and Max Sheldon Stiles; A Granddaughter, Sophie Elaine Hinkle; a Brother, Roger (Cathy) Salyers; a Sister, Betty (Earl) Adams and Sister-In-Law Jeanne Salyers. He was preceded in death by his Father, Carl Salyers; Mother, Leatha Salyers; Two Sisters, Nori Bennett, and Doris Mackey; and Three Brothers, Kenny Salyers, Richard Salyers and Curt Salyers.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026 11 am to 1pm at Day and Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 1pm.
