Dr. James E. Williams, a 52-year-old Internal Medicine Physician who graduated from the University of Texas, died in Austin on Tuesday, June 22nd. James grew up and spent most of his life in Austin; he was an avid Longhorn Fan. He had a love of sports and was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan. James graduated high school from Westlake in Austin, where both his children are currently enrolled. He studied medicine at New York Medical College and Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara. James spent time in the villages of Mexico treating people, a meaningful experience that he spoke of often. He always found his way back to Mexico where he would vacation with his family and climb. His love of sports took him on many exciting adventures. On top of being a husband and a father, he was a big brother to a sister, Lisa and brother, Shawn. His brother Shawn passed away in 2011 and James never really got over that loss. They were both doctors and extremely competitive with each other their entire lives. He ran cross-country in high school, where he helped his team advance to State. After high school, he was an experienced bicycler and qualified for the US Junior Olympics. He found a love for climbing a year later and became an expert level climber. He won the Granite Gripper at Enchanted Rock, which is an accomplishment that he was proud of, and even prouder that his family was there to celebrate with him. James conquered the EL Captain in Yosemite after he was 40 and worked hard to continue improving his climbing skills. He would often be found at the Enchanted Rock, which is in the Hill Country near Austin. He had an unfortunate, near fatal accident, while climbing and for some it would have been hard or impossible to come back from; however, James did not let it stop him. With his family by his side, he made a miraculous recovery and recently started climbing again. He even was able to get his Bachelors of Chemical Engineering from University of Austin just months after his accident. For him to be able walk across the stage and accept the diploma was inspiring. He already had so many credentials with is Medical Degree but was focused on reaching that goal of finishing his degree from the school he had always loved. James had his family practice in Austin and San Antonio for the last 13 years. He was passionate about his patients and would often do innovative new things that his patients could benefit from. He was very proud of his weight loss programs, in which he also benefited from and was able to keep the weight off for over a decade. Although he was very passionate about his practice and rock climbing, it is the love for his family that he should be remembered for. Ileana, Cathy and Alex were always with him on his adventures. His wife Ileana, his daughter Cathy and son Alex survive James. Also by his parents, Jim and Linda Williams; his grandmother Peggy Cole; his sister, Lisa Morgan; his mother in law, Lyce Soxo; sister in law, Mayra Rivera; 5 nieces, Samantha Morgan, Brittney Stvartak and her husband Jacob Stvartak and their children, his great niece and nephew, Wyatt and Evie, Sydney Morgan, Kaylie Morgan, and Ivanna Garzon which is also his God Daughter; 3 nephews, Jonathan Morgan, Matthew Morgan, and Arian Garzon; as well as numerous friends and colleagues. His brother Dr. Shawn P. Williams precedes him in death. He was passionate about life and helping people and will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known him. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 1 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Lakeway, Texas. There will be private church services later for the family.
