

Dr. Samuel Houston Carter BS, MS, MD, 87 years old, of Las Vegas, made his transition on August 7, 2024. He was born in Muldrow, Oklahoma, April 26,1937 to Johnnie and Leona Carter. Dr. Carter attended Vian High School in Oklahoma; Graduated Summa Cum Laude from Langston University in Oklahoma where he pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Received a Master in Physiology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison; He earned his Medical Degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1967. Dr. Carter worked tirelessly as an incredible Anesthesiologist, arguably the “best in the state” at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He kept countless people alive during surgery and never missed a day of work in his 35 years of service.
He accepted Christ at an early age and he was a dedicated member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Muldrow, Oklahoma. There he served as Superintendent of Sunday School; a devoted member of Second Baptist Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan; and was a member of Victory Missionary Baptist Church in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Samuel met his college sweetheart Barbara, on the campus of University of Wisconsin in Madison. Dr. Carter and Dr. Barbara N. McMillian Carter RN, BS, MSW, MS, PhD were joined in matrimony on December 23, 1962. Born of this 62-year union, came three children; Nichelle Reneé Grant BS, MA, CDE (Certified Diversity Executive), Bobby Kimani Carter BA, MFA (Master of Fine Arts), and Dr. Maia Diarra Carter BS, MD, MPH, FACHE (Fellow, American College of Healthcare Executives).
Dr. Carter was very thankful for his family and often proudly said he’s the “luckiest man alive” to have such an amazing family. As a dedicated father, he was always willing to share his wisdom and provide everything that the family needed and more. His humor kept the family laughing, leaving a lasting legacy of family togetherness and resilient strength. He was a lover of Blues music, black-eyed peas, Jiffy cornbread, and ice cream, none of which he would ever refuse. His motto, “Never, never, give up” lives in our spirit every day.
Samuel was preceded in death by his father (Johnnie), his mother (Leona), 3 brothers (Ray, Lawrel, and Johnnie Jr.), 4 sisters (Sadie, Flossie, Bessie, and Lennie). He leaves to cherish his memory, his phenomenal loving wife, Dr. Barbara N. Carter, Las Vegas, NV; 3 loving children, Nichelle R. (Ulyses) Grant, Hoschton, GA, Bobby K. Carter, Honolulu, HI, Dr. Maia D. Carter, Las Vegas, NV; 3 grandchildren, Erica R. (Gabe) Jones, Atlanta, GA, Alexandria E. Abrams, Las Vegas, NV, Octavia N. Abrams Las Vegas, NV; 1 great grandchild, Promise B. Jones, Atlanta, GA; 1 brother, Carl E. (Dorothy) Carter, Los Angeles, CA, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues.
He loved his family and his family loved him. As a compassionate husband and an inspiring father, he did his best which was more than enough.
