Marjorie attended elementary school in Carrollton, Columbia, Marshall, and Warsaw, Missouri. She graduated from Warsaw High School in 1940.
From there, she ventured to Sedalia, Missouri, where she attended Central Business College and was employed at J.A. Lamy Manufacturing Company. After passing a merit exam, she moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, where she worked at the Unemployment Compensation Commission.
In February 1945, after passing the Civil Service Exam, Marjorie and her good friend Pauline moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked at the Pentagon. This was a very exciting time in Marjorie’s life!
In June 1942, while still in Missouri, she met her future husband, then Captain Willard M. Fetterhoff, at a dance. She waited for him while he served in World War II, and they were married October 27, 1946 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
In May 1947, Marjorie and Willard left New Jersey and headed west, seeking a dry climate for Willard. They ended up in Prescott, AZ, where their 3 daughters, Anne, Mary, and Donna, were born. During their time in Prescott, Marjorie chose to care for home and family, taking her turn as Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, and Sunday School teacher along with other volunteer jobs.
In 1965, when Willard accepted a position at Arizona State University, the family moved to Tempe.
A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, Marjorie was also active in ASU Faculty Wives Club and Arizona Quilter’s Guild. She was one of the charter members of that organization.
Quilting was Marjorie’s passion. During her lifetime, she made over 200 quilts, both large and small. Each is a beautiful work of art, carefully planned and pieced with love. They are the stories of our lives, told with fabric.
Marjorie was always proudest of her family, including her 5 grandchildren Lee, Christina, Sonya, Erick, and Will, and her great-grandson Logan.
A memorial service in celebration of Marjorie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 25 at Tempe First United Methodist Church, 215 E. University Drive.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Tempe First United Methodist Church (United Methodist Women or Stitch in Time), United Methodist Outreach Ministry, or a charity of your choice.
