Peter Gritis Jr.

Passed away on 24 December, 2020

Peter Gritis Jr, 65 of Richmond, VA died on December 24 after a lengthy struggle with a chronic illness.

Peter was born into a military family on base at Ft. Belvoir, VA to Peter and Helen Hurych Gritis and was the beloved only brother to his three sisters. Peter spent his youth in Turkey and in Germany as his father was a career military officer. When Peter was nine years old the family returned to the United States and made Fairfax their home.

As Peter grew, so did his love for the outdoors and wildlife. Peter was happiest while on one of his boats, enjoying the magnificence of the natural world. His family treasures their many memories of happy times together while boating, fishing and traveling the US.

Peter is survived by his wife, Karen, his 3 children: Erin (Court), Peter Tyler (Alison) and Spencer (Audrey) and his three sisters, Patricia Lessard (William, Jr), Carol Russell (James) and Gail Bourner (Richard) and a niece and five nephews.

Peter was preceded in death by both his father and mother, LTC (ret.) Peter Gritis and Helen Hurych Gritis.

I met Peter 4 years ago , he was a good friend to my daughter. I lost my daughter 2 years ago and Peter was a great support system during and even in the past 2 years, in so many ways to me and my family. I will be forever grateful for that. He helped me thru many a dark moment.
Peter is the most gentle, compassionate and caring person I've ever known.
I will forever cherish our friendship and his memory. I will miss Peter Gritis everyday.

May you rest in peace Pete, I just went by his house today hoping to see how he was doing and talking about old times and saw this when I got back home today as I knew of Petes latest struggle with his heath and visited him several times at his homes over the last 8 years , I knew Pete since 1974 , we both went to the same high school doing many things over the long years bowling , a bit of hunting and fishing and lots of hanging out with friends . Pete was always very proud of his family and was a very hard working dedicated man who earned his retirement . Pete always had a good heart . Im truly sad to read about Petes passing, and Ill be thinking of Pete remembering the good times we had . My deepest sympathy goes to Petes family .

Very fond memories with Peter over the years as we cheered for our kids playing sports or for the the Caps.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Peter’s family. My Dad was his uncle Bill, and I recall the great kindness Peter bestowed on us by flying to Chicago to attend my Dad’s wake a number of years ago. It was an unexpected visit, and I know it also provided a bright spot of comfort to his own father (my Uncle Peter) who was also in attendance and suffering from his own health issues. Our deepest condolences, and we wish your family peace in the difficult days ahead.
