Obituary of Samuel Alexander Moyer
It is with much sorrow that the family announces the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend, Samuel Alexander Moyer, 82 of Grottoes, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 7, 2021. He was born January 30, 1939, a son of the late Samuel Neve and Virginia Alto (Morris) Moyer. “Sammy” attended Waynesboro High School, was a former employee of General Electric, DuPont, ConAgra and retired from Augusta Lumber. He was a member of Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church, enjoyed bluegrass music, gardening, and in his spare time loved spending time with family, helping others and never turned anyone down for help. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Walter Wheeler, Sr.; mother-in-law Helen (Chicken) Chambers Cubbage; brother, Charles Moyer; sisters, Lula Brooks, Nellie Coffey, Gilda Cale, Love Vallie Chittum, Slyvia Gray, Audrey Propts, Margie Gibson; brother-in-law, Harold Wheeler; an adopted son-in-law, Delmar Moats, Sr. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Wheeler Moyer, of whom he married on September 5, 1959; son, Dale Moyer and wife, Janet; daughters, Wanda Whitesell and husband, Frankie, Sue Moyer, and Margaret Rodriguez and husband, Joey; grandchildren, Andrew Whitesell, Joseph Rodriguez, Courtney Helmick and husband, Michael, Matthew Moyer, Alexis Rodriguez, Madison Moyer and Cameron Moyer; four great grandchildren, and one to be born. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church, Waynesboro with the Rev. Dr. Paul LaPrevotte officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Monday, July 12, 2021 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St. Waynesboro, Va. Active pallbearers will be Joseph Rodriguez, Matthew Moyer, Michael Helmick, Daniel Whitesell, Matt Trent, Jerry Coffey, Austin Caton and Rickey Lowery. The family wishes to thank the Grottoes Rescue Squad, Grottoes Fire Department, Augusta County Sheriff’s Department, Virginia State Police and Virginia Department of Transportation.
