Obituary of James Richard Houston
James Richard “Dick” Houston, age 83, of Winter Haven, Florida, passed away Friday, May 21, 2021. Born January 8, 1938, in Nashville, Indiana, he was the son of Richard M. Houston and Betty (Skinner) Houston Bush. Dick spent most of his childhood in Nashville and graduated on June 6, 1956, from Ben Davis High School. Dick went on to serve in the Indiana National Guard from 1960 to 1964. He was married to Cynthia A. Sturm for 25 years and Cathy Jo Anderson for 16 years. He was President/Owner of H & H Bulk Transport and Coke Transport. When Dick retired, he moved to Winter Haven, Florida. He enjoyed fishing, football, baseball, basketball, and both NASCAR and Indy Car racing. His most favorite activity was playing and watching golf. He was also an avid IU fan. He was a member of IMTA (Indiana Motor Truck Association) where he served as Chairman/President in 1978 and was presented with their Founders Award in 2006. He was also a member of the Nashville Masonic Lodge 135 F&AM, Valley of Indianapolis Scottish Rite NMJ, and Shriners International. Dick is survived by his children: James B. “J.B.” Houston, of Indianapolis, IN; Kimberly (Steve) Stout, of Morgantown, IN; Deborah D. Houston, of Phoenix, AZ; Julia (Kevin) Cunningham, of Phoenix, AZ; and stepdaughter, Kristin (Marcus) Normington, of Greenwood, IN. His grandchildren: James A. “Tony” Hudson, Ashley B. Stout, Caleb Cunningham, and Gage Normington. His siblings: David G. Houston, Patricia D. “Tabor” Houston Baise, Kathryn “Kathy” Bush Melevage, and James Kenneth “Kenny” Bush. Second Wife: Cathy Jo Houston. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Cynthia Houston. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, June 3, from 12 noon to 2:00 pm at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home, 1682 St. Rd. 135 North, Nashville, IN 47448. There will be a memorial service immediately following at 2:00 pm at the funeral home for family and friends. Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nashville immediately following the service.
