Helmut Georg Billenstein

Helmut Georg Billenstein of Falls Church, VA passed away suddenly on July 13th, 2021 in Fairfax, Virginia. His loving wife of 47 years, Heide (Riedel); son, Martin; and daughter-in-law, Amanda (Guthridge) were at his side. His daughter, Kerstin was with him via calls from Denmark. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Jens Bjoern; grandchildren, Stella, Mira, and Lucas; his sister, Hildegard Pothier; in-laws, Gisela Sohre (& Heinz), Juergen Riedel (& Sabine), and Gerd Riedel (& Baerbel); as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends. Helmut was born January 5th, 1939 in Amberg, Germany, where he spent his childhood and youth. In 1960, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada in the footsteps of his predeceased brother, Michael and sister, Hildegard. In 1966, he moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the World Bank. He worked there for 30 years, the last many years as a Senior Financial Officer. Upon retirement, Helmut traveled extensively and enjoyed a good and busy life with his family and friends. Helmut will be remembered for his warm and loving nature, his positive outlook, his outgoingness, his kindness, his generosity, and his anecdotes, quirks, and special brand of humor. A funeral ceremony will be held on Friday, July 23rd at 4PM at Murphy Funeral Home, located at 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church, VA 22046.
