From Phillip Sheftelman: My grandfather positively affected my life in more than vacations and fun as most grandparents do. My grandfather taught me how to be a man. He taught me how to love, how to hug; and what empathy and genuine kindness means. I learned more in day to day life on what kind of man I want to be and will continue to strive to meet his expectations. Papa, as my brother and I call him, loved like no one I’ve ever met. He loved everyone and everyone loved him. From Robert Sheftelman: He taught me how to swim, taught me to be a Redskins fan. We took vacations to Tanger, Smith Island, Luray Caverns, the Flying Circus and Hatteras. I lived with Papa and Nanny from the time I was 14 months old until I was 6 years old. We painted pumpkins, had numerous holidays. Before I went to Basic Training he told me, “you have two ears, one mouth so you can listen twice as much as you speak”. I ended up being the top soldier in my platoon and getting promoted after Basic. He was in the Army so I joined the Army. He was 101st Airborne post WWII. He went to the University of Virginia, so I went to college. I graduated with honors with a Bachelor’s degree. I used to sit on his lap and watch “Wheel of Fortune”. I learned letters that way.
