Obituary of Michael J Kosar
MICHAEL JOSEPH KOSAR 1949 – 2020 Michael Joseph Kosar, 70, formally of Butler, PA, passed away on Wednesday, February 12th, 2020 while surrounded by his family at home. Born in Detroit, MI to the late Joseph, Jr and Helen Vavro Kosar. His family moved Butler, PA when Mike was a small infant, and he eventually moved to Vienna, VA to pursue job opportunities with the Federal government. He graduated from Butler Area Senior High School in 1967 and became one of those famous college rovers. He attended Slippery Rock State College, Butler County Community College, East Tennessee State University, Northern Virginia Community College, and George Mason University. Mike started his working career as a college student at the old Morgan’s Car Wash in Butler and eventually ended up working at Pullman Standard for several summers. While working at Pullman Standard, he suffered a very serious life threatening injury and re-evaluated his options. He decided a paper cut was far less dangerous and took the Civil Service Exam to apply for a desk job. He started his Federal career working for the General Services Administration, Office of Finance, Indian Trust Accounting Division in Falls Church, VA. He finished his Federal career by retiring at the end of 2004, having spent his entire service with GSA’s Office of Finance. He also worked several years as Treasurer for Skehan Televideo Service and Northern Virginia Senior Softball (NVSS). During this period, he met and eventually married Kathleen A Skehan in 1976. They remained together, producing two wonderful children, until her death in 1996. Mike loved watching and listening to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Steelers. Even through their lean years he remained a staunch fan. He despised the famous band wagon in Washington, DC and their so-called fans. Mike was an avid softball player beginning after he could no longer play baseball, his favorite sport. He played in numerous leagues in Butler and Virginia until 2017, when illness overtook him and he could no longer play. He was also on several tournament teams that travelled the country, including Murphy’s Law, Northern Virginia Force, Mid Atlantic Cavaliers, DHS and the Vipers. One of his great joys was playing in NVSS. He was a player and manager in the National Conference. Since NVSS played their games in the mornings, he was always amused to be sitting in traffic, going to a game while everyone else was scrambling to get to work. Mike is survived by his children, Christopher Kosar and Leslie Kosar, both of Vienna, VA; His granddaughter Morgan Kosar-Gidda, also in Vienna: his extended family of brothers and sisters, Michael and Andrea Skehan of Washington, DC; Mary and Jose Awill and Daniel Skehan of New Orleans, LA; and Jack Skehan of France); several nieces and nephews; and his long-time companion and friend, Mary Hoover of Harrisonburg, VA. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sister Terrie Lynn Parsons, and extended brother Patrick Skehan. A visitation will take place at National Funeral home on February 18th, from 10:00-11:00AM. A funeral service will follow from 11:00AM-12:00PM. Following the service, internment will take place at National Memorial Park at 12:00PM. Mike has requested that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the cancer or COPD organization of your choice.
