Obituary of Betty Anne Swanson
Betty Anne Swanson, 93, passed away on May 7, 2019. The cause of death was pneumonia. At the time of her death, Betty was a resident of Collington in Mitchellville, Maryland. As the child of a USNA graduate and career naval officer, Betty, who was born in Baltimore, lived in Annapolis during many years of her childhood. She graduated from high school in Garden City, NY, and then received an Associate of Arts degree from Chevy Chase Junior College in Chevy Chase, MD, and a bachelor’s degree in English from George Washington University. Betty spent almost all her adulthood living in Washington, D.C., where she worked as an aide on Capitol Hill, a legislative correspondent for the Agency for Internal Development, and an administrative assistant at trade associations and several law firms. Betty continued to spend much of her weekend and vacation time in Annapolis. Betty was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority; the Junior League of Washington; the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century; the Daughters of the American Revolution; the Woman’s National Democratic Club; the GWUH Women’s Board, Inc; and the National Symphony Orchestra’s Women’s Committee (now the Volunteer Council for the National Symphony). Betty is survived by her niece, M. Anne Swanson, of Bethesda, MD, and three nephews, Clarence Floyd Swanson, III, of Centreville, VA; William Claiborne Swanson, of High Point, NC; and Robert Stuart Swanson, of Edgewater, MD. She is also survived by her cousin, Katherine Farinholt Averyt, of Fairfax Station, VA, who was Betty’s devoted caregiver during the last 15 years of her life, and many other cousins. A graveside memorial service will be held at St. Anne’s Cemetery on May 13th at 11 am. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Michael J.
