There will be a memorial celebration for the homegoing of Barbara Ruth Cashwell Matthews, Saturday October 5th at 1:30 pm Central time at Centre First Baptist Church. The celebration will be led by Pastor Eddie Nation. Ruth was a resident of Cherokee County, Alabama. Ruth passed away with the rising of the sun on September 25, 2019 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Matthews, her son, Colby Matthews, her parents, Evander Cashwell and Juanita Howard Cashwell, her brothers, Marvin Cashwell, Winton Cashwell, George Cashwell, and her sister, Frances Teachey. She is survived by her daughter, Carrie Bell, her brother Eugene Cashwell, sister Jewel King and (hers and his) hoard of beloved nieces and nephews and their families . In Ruth's senior yearbook she wrote, "I wish to travel the world over and become the first woman astronaut." With her husband and children she lived and traveled in Europe and Asia. The family lived up and down the East coast and moved to the South when Paul retired from the Army. After Ruth retired they settled in Cherokee County Alabama on beautiful Weiss Lake. Above all else Ruth was a Christian and cherished her salvation. She was a loving, compassionate woman. She was content in her own company but loved people and conversation.. Ruth was a very stylish woman and Paul always told her, "cha cha cha" when he saw what she was wearing to church or anywhere else. She was well read, creative, determined, a savvy business woman and a fantastic cook. Her hobbies were varied and surprising, but in her early years she was a hair stylist and beautician by trade, a voracious reader, gardener, played pinochle, sewed, crocheted, hiked, refinished and reupholstered furniture , baked and decorated cakes and decorated her homes beautifully. In her later years she volunteered at her church, the Red Cross and styled hair in the Alzheimer Unit at the nursing home. She still read 5 books each week, played (and won) Scrabble and Yahtzee. She loved surprise trips to get her favorite pizza. But most of all, she loved being with her friends and fam ily In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to Centre First Baptist Church-ROC Church building fund.]
