Obituary of Maria Falconer
On Thursday June 27th, 2019 our beloved Maria Falconer (nee Kane); wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband Ted and her children Mark (Amanda), Kyla (Parth), and Michelle (Jacob). The legacy Maria has left on this world will be forever felt by those close to her, evidenced by the light that shines on through her grandchildren Keiran, Larson, Tahlia, Catalina, Penelope, Morgan, Emma and Joshua. Maria is survived by her mother Mary and her sisters, Winifred (Brian) and Patricia. Maria will also be remembered by her step children Stephen (Susan) and Jennifer (Chris) as well as her numerous nieces, nephews, extended families and her dear friends. Maria joins her father, the late, Peter Kane in Heaven. Maria Falconer was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland before emigrating to Canada in 1963. As a teen she attended York Memorial Collegiate where she first found her love of rock n’ roll and The Rolling Stones. She was a studious teen but also found time to attend concerts even if she needed to hitchhike to get there. Maria received her Bachelor of Arts from York University, her Specialist in Special Education from Humber College and her Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto. She was a dedicated educator, beginning her career helping children with developmental needs in 1973. After several years dedicated to working with kids with special needs, Maria followed her calling to be a teacher and went back to school. She had a 30 year career teaching in elementary schools all across Dufferin-Peel, until her retirement in 2011; Lester B. Pearson Catholic School (2001 – 2011) Cardinal Newman Catholic School (1995 – 2001) St. John Fisher Catholic School (1989 – 1995) St. Jerome Catholic School (1987- 1989) Maria first married at the age of 25 and had three wonderful children in 1978 (Mark), 1981 (Kyla) and 1986 (Michelle). A testament to Maria's "get things done" attitude rings eternally true as we pay homage to her fighting spirit. We are reminded of a time when Maria carried and delivered Michelle while simultaneously attending (and graduating) from teachers college all the while managing an already busy household and career. Maria reconnected with Ted Hadfield in 2006, a longtime acquaintance they quickly became lifelong partners and began their journey together into the golden age of retirement. The journey was filled with happiness that included; a shared birthday, weddings and grandchildren as the years went on. Maria and Ted split their retirement years between the city, where Maria painted and Ted doted and cottage country, where mum read and Ted puttered. Maria never turned away when faced with adversity, she battled and never complained. She constantly reminded us through her actions what a strong and vibrant woman she was never bowing to the challenges in her life, even at the end, no matter how unfair those around her said the circumstance was. If the world could gain an ounce of Maria's compassion, understanding and patience it would be a better place. Her glowing heart, infectious laugh, strength and positive outlook on life will never be forgotten and will live on as her legacy for eternity.
