Obituary of Mr. Uros Sladakovic
Uros Sladakovic, 86, of Vancouver, British Columbia passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Youville Residences. Uros was born on October 27, 1932 in Biovičino Selo a village located in the municipality of Kistanje, in former Yugoslavia. He was the youngest of 5 and was preceded in death by his siblings. Uros is survived by his wife Mara of 48 years; two daughters; Lily (Kurt) and Milica and three grandchildren who he loved dearly; Nikola, Daniel and Kristina. Uros’ journey to Canada began in 1957 while he was living as a displaced person at Camp Asten in Austria. With hard work and determination and with no English skills he made his way onto a boat bound for Canada. He spent his early years working as a labourer in the Yukon Territories and Toronto before heading west to British Columbia in 1968. From 1968 to 1986 Uros continued to work as a labourer and was one of many immigrants who worked on large construction projects to build British Columbia’s current infrastructure. These were significant projects and included the Bennett Dam, Mica Dam and Revelstoke Dam. His final construction job before retirement in 1986 was working on the Skytrain Expo Line. Uros worked really hard to establish a life for himself and his family in Canada. His family knows that everything he did, all his hard work, was for his wife and two daughters. After retirement, there was no stopping Uros. Uros lived life to the fullest and on his own terms. He did what he wanted to and when he wanted to. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, friends, watching hockey, attending church and staying active. His days were filled with morning coffees at McDonald’s, followed by Tai Chi at Memorial Park in South Vancouver; then a quick jaunt home so he could watch The Price is Right at 10:00 am and then he was off again. After watching TV he’d jump on his bicycle to go swimming at the local community centres. However, those that knew him best, knew that once summer came along he could be found at Second Beach daily soaking up the rays, year after year; then home for dinner and after dinner yet another adventure to the mall to walk around and people watch, ensuring he lived his life to the fullest. The Funeral Service will take place at St. Archangel Michael Serbian Church, 7837 Canada Way, Burnaby, BC on January 22, 2019 at 11:30 a.m.
