Obituary of Matthew Lee Sklepowich
Matthew passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of family on Friday, November 23, 2018 at the Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre located in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 50 years. Our family is overwhelmed with sadness as we say goodbye to this amazing soul who touched many lives through his kindness and boundless energy. Matthew's vibrant personality shined bright as a loving Father, Son, Brother, Uncle, and faithful friend. Matthew is survived by his Son Owen Matthew Sklepowich; Mother Maureen Sklepowich; Brother Steven Sklepowich; Sister Leslee Phillips and Brother-in-Law Eric Phillips; Niece Regan Phillips; and his Nephew Ethan Phillips. Matthew was predeceased by his Father Ernie Sklepowich; and his Grandparents; Helen and Harold Lee and Michael and Anne Sklepowich. Matthew faced every obstacle he encountered in life with strength and courage. This is exactly how he lived the last seven years of his journey with this ruthless disease we call ALS. Matthew learned quickly that adaptation meant survival. He accepted his fate and showed all who surrounded him how to face adversity despite the cards he was dealt, we are proud of his bravery. We have gratitude beyond words for Matthew's care team. To every care giver that brought patience, understanding and a positive attitude to work with them every day, we thank you! Our family acknowledges your efforts to show kindness and compassion to another human being. We also thank the ALS Society for their endless support. This non-profit organization has shown generosity beyond measure! Thank you for the love that poured out of Spiritual Services both at the Peter Lougheed Hospital and the Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre. Your guidance, mentorship and support gave our family a soft place to fall. The weekly visits of prayer over Matthew and our family strengthened our spirit and gave Matthew peace and comfort. As our family bids farewell to Matthew, our hearts are aching. May God's love and light surround Matthew with comfort and joy, he deserves the most beautiful place to rest his soul.
