Obituary of Margaret "Anne" Yanofsky
YANOFSKY, (Margaret) Anne - age 77, of Halifax passed away peacefully Sunday January 7, 2018 in Halifax, NS at the Geriatric Assessment Unit. Originally from Trail, BC, Anne settled in Halifax in the early 1960’s. Anne was a teacher and supporter to countless students and colleagues during her time teaching Microbiology at the Nova Scotia Institute of Technology (now Nova Scotia Community College). Her thirst for knowledge and learning was exemplified when she decided to further her education at Mount Saint Vincent University completing both her BA and MA while teaching full time and raising her teenage children. In all areas of her life she had the wonderful ability to instill confidence, inspire and challenge people to do what they did not think was possible, providing support while allowing each person to own their accomplishments. She was a dear and cherished wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, grandaunt, friend, teacher and surrogate mother and grandmother to countless others. She gave often, and willingly of her time energy and spirit to many. She held her family, music and children most close to her heart. A vibrant and positive force to be reckoned with she was the master at getting things done. She was strong supporter of Symphony Nova Scotia, a leading champion of the Youth Education Program. Anne was heavily involved with Women for Music, as well as a leading figure with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in its’ early days. She loved a challenge and was an avid bridge player and gardener throughout her life. Anne was a loving and caring wife and is survived by her husband of 51 years Sam J. Yanofsky, her children Kirk (Joy) and Tara, brother David Barrett (Judy) and her grandchildren Thane, Paige and Fife, as well as her honorary grandchildren, her many friends and her dearest friend Margaret Swift. Anne was pre-deceased by her parents Arthur and Grace Barrett and brother Wes Barrett. Her family would like to extend special thanks to the Cardiology team at the QEII Health Sciences Centre for over 25 years of excellent care. We would also like to thank the Orthopedic Unit and Geriatric Assessment Unit teams for their wonderful care of our Mother during her final weeks. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Symphony NS Youth Education Program. Celebration of Anne’s life will be held on Sunday May 6 at 5:00pm in the Lilian Piercey Concert Hall Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts 6199 Chebucto Rd, Halifax, NS B3L 1K7.
