OBITUARY
Mark Thomas Gillis
July 5, 1957 – January 17, 2019
IN THE CARE OF
A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home
Of Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is with infinite sadness that we announce the sudden passing of son and brother, Mark Thomas Gillis, on January 17, 2019, of natural causes, at his home in Halifax. Mark was born in Rochester, Minnesota, on July 5, 1957, to Daniel Alexander Gillis and the late Rose Marie (Langley) Gillis. He inherited a fierce sense of independence from his mother (at times to her chagrin) and a dry, self-deprecating sense of humour from his father (much to his joy). Both served him well. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Saint Mary’s University and spent much of his career with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. As a young man, Mark loved adventure and travel which resulted in such exploits as backpacking across Australia and Thailand. He was a born storyteller who could (and did) bring tears of laughter with stories of his escapades. He was predeceased by his mother, Rosie, whom he loved dearly. While he chose to walk unaccompanied through his life, he will be deeply missed by his father, Alex (Judy); brothers, Sandy (Pat) and Colin (Jane); sisters, Jane (David) and Lorna (Ken); nephew ,Spencer (Victoria) and nieces, Robyn (Matthew) and Erica (Jason). In keeping with Mark’s lifelong embrace of stoicism, there will be no service. In his memory, show a kindness to another, be good to your family, and raise a glass to life. Rest in peace Mark.
