Obituary of Mary Mildred Dicks
Dicks (Pittman), Mary Mildred, age 98 passed away peacefully in her sleep at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish on May 29, 2019 with her daughter Norma by her side. Mary was born on January 1st, 1921 in Lamaline, Newfoundland. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Francis Pittman. Mary immigrated to Halifax through Pier 21, a young lady the age of 18. She had good luck finding work at Camp Hill Hospital, met the ‘love of her life’, Lambert Dicks, and raised her family in Fairview. She loved her family, had many good friends over the years, and was always there to console you or cheer you up with a card or words of encouragement. She spent her latter years in Edgemere, a senior’s apartment in downtown Dartmouth, where she enjoyed a very active social life and engaged in many activities such as ceramics, bingo, and knitting with the Crafty Ladies. Mary loved getting out to browse the malls and attended church service every Sunday where she sang the hymns from her heart. She moved to Antigonish to live with her daughter, Norma, when she felt she needed more help with daily tasks. Her strong spirit kept her going until she needed more care and moved the RK MacDonald Nursing Home, where she was loved and cared for by the angels there. Our family appreciate all the staff at the R.K., and it meant the world to us to have her in such good hands! She had songs she would sing when she felt stronger: “Will You Love Me When I'm Old and Feeble" by Smiley Bates and “Tom Dooley” by the Kingston Trio. Music was a constant in Mary’s life, and she would always sing a tune to uplift others. Her bright spirit was loved by all her crossed her path. She is survived by her daughter, Norma (Don); grandchildren, Alana (Chris), Sarah (Scottie), Rebekah (Nick), Aleen (Tim), James (Stacey), and Evelynn (Adam); great-grandchildren, Josh, Lewis, Ava, Charlotte, Norman, Chase, Madalyn, and Otto. She was predeceased by her husband, Lambert and her daughter, Sandra. Her siblings, Thomas, Emmie, Dorothy, Otto, and Mable. Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Saturday (June 1st) from 2-4 and 7-9 and at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, on Sunday (June 2nd) from 2-4 and 7-9. A Celebration of Her Life will be held at Bethel Baptist Church on Monday at 2:00pm on 316 Windmill Road, Dartmouth, Reverend Dr. Vance Arbeau presiding with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Lower Sackville. Family flowers only, please. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the RK MacDonald Nursing Home Foundation or a charity of your choice. Online condolences: www.clcurry.com.
