Obituary of Dr. Bireswar Bose
We announce with great sadness the passing of Dr. Bireswar Bose in Edmonton on March 3, 2018 while surrounded by his loving care givers, niece and friends at the age of 87. Dr. Bose was born in Calcutta and graduated in Medicine from the R. G. Kar Medical College, University of Calcutta. After a year of internship, he went to Vellore Medical College in South India for nine months to obtain further training. He then left for England where he spent eight years to obtain surgical training and become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. He married Dr. Anita Roy, who was his medical college sweetheart and two years junior in school. She joined him in England and obtained advanced training as an anesthesiologist. In 1967, he moved to the University of Pennsylvania hospital in Philadelphia to obtain further training. On returning from the USA, he spent another two years in London, England before emigrating to Canada in 1969. He settled in the town of Barrhead, Alberta to carry on his surgical practice. In 1974, he became a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons (Canada). He was appointed as a consultant surgeon to the breast unit at Cross Cancer Institute where he was involved in both clinical and research work. Greatly dedicated to his profession, he was much liked and respected by his patients and colleagues. He published 29 scientific articles and made many presentations in international surgical meetings in many countries. His significant contributions include developing a technique for excision of nail-fold for in-growing toe nails (1971), and he used amniotic membrane to treat burn wound (1979). Both processes are still relevant today. In 2002, he retired from active practice to take care of his wife Dr. Anita Bose who became ill. She passed away in April of 2017. He and his wife were popularly known as “Biru-da” and “Anita-di” in the Bengali community. They both played a major role for many years in the affairs of Edmonton Bengali Association and both were loved and respected by the community. Their contributions will be remembered fondly for a long time. A celebration of Dr Bose’s life will be held Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Hainstock’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, 9810 34 Avenue NW, Edmonton T6E 6L1 followed by cremation.
