Obituary for Augustine Peter Bertino
Augustine “Augie” Peter Bertino, 71, passed away on May 22nd, 2019, in La Jolla, California, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Augie was born on September 25th, 1947, to Albert and Georgina Bertino in Los Angeles, California. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and California State University, Northridge. Augie married his high school sweetheart, Jean Satris, in 1971, and pursued a long career in sales. In 1976, Augie and Jean moved to the Sacramento area where they lived for 37 years, raising three children and developing friendships that would last his lifetime. In 2007, they moved to San Marcos, California, to retire and spend time with their children and grandchildren.
Augie was larger than life. The combination of his commanding presence, booming voice and quick wit, made Augie the funniest person in the room at any gathering. His family and friends would agree that it was an honor to be a punchline in any of his jokes as his sense of humor always came from a place of love.
While he enjoyed golf, crossword puzzles, and vodka martinis, nothing gave him more happiness than having Jean by his side, which is where she remained up until the final moment of his life. Augie is survived by his wife, Jean; his son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Guadie Bertino; his daughter, Christine Bertino; his daughter and son-in-law, Bridget and Brett Byrd; his sister, Eleanor Bertino; his five grandchildren, Talia, Ariana, Daniella, Zachary, and Alexis; and five nieces.
Augie will be honored in a private ceremony by his family. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Love on Your Back organization (3597 Kellington Ct., Oceanside, CA 92056) where his wife continues to work as a volunteer.

I send my condolences to all go Augie's family. I met Augie when I was 16 years old at our home in Hillsborough, CA.
At the time, my brother was hosting a fraternity party .
Augie arrived late. He had obviously started his party much earlier.
Augie arrived with a very loud announcement and dominated the party with his endless laughter.
I only remember seeing him a few times but will never forget him being "the life of the party".
I am sure the party is still continuing for Augie and his new found friends.

I met Augie at the University of San Francisco in the 1960's.
Although, we did not see each often, we remained good friends.
I was honored to have been the target of Augie's "zings" many times. And his machine-gun laugh was unforgettable.
I will remember him fondly.

It was with such great sadness that Linda and I received your note about Augie’s recent passing. We are so disappointed that we never followed through on our thoughts of many years to look you and Augie up when we were down in the San Diego area. I’m not sure that in our married lives we ever got together as couples but I always felt that you and Augie were good friends. In reading the other comments posted, I can easily think back to all the times we spent together at the Bertino house with Augie ripping into everyone and hearing his booming laugh. Takes me back to the good times in our early lives.
It’s a great comfort to have your kids and grandkids near you. Know you are in our thoughts and prayers and that we love you.
Gary and Linda
My email is Gary.firstname.lastname@example.org. Send me yours and next time we are at a soccer tournament down your way, we will try to get in touch with you

I did not know Augie really well but well enough to know that I really, really liked him. He always made me smile. I made it a point to talk with him when I saw him at one of our neighborhood events or at the golf course. I will truly miss Augie!

There was never a higher honor than to have Auggie attend a function that was in connection with Jean's work with Scholastic. I was honored by his presence at my wedding and at my 40th birthday. It meant so much. God bless you and keep you Auggie.

I never met a person who was so quick- witted and you could never get one up on him. Such a fun guy to be with on or off the golf course. We will miss our golf buddy who owned the 18th hole.

Jean, there are no words to express my sadness for you and all the family upon Augie's passing. To me he was like a giant, funny teddy bear, a very engaging personality which was shared by all and especially, I am sure, the grandchildren whom he adored. I remember the fun times visiting you, Augie and the family in California with Kevin and Rita. Also the visit to Newburyport with Brigid for her event and then, of course, the Manning wedding in NY and the unforgetable bus ride and Augie keeping us in stitches all the way to the reception. Augie was a special person to so many friends and family and these memories I pray will help to keep you strong in the days ahead. Life was good with Augie in it! May his soul rest in peace with the Lord!

We've known Bridget for close to 10 yrs now. The first time we met Augie, along with the rest of his beautiful family, we were invited and welcomed into the Bertino household for Thanksgiving in 2012. We were living in Los Angeles at the time and didn't have family that lived close by. My now sister-in-law, Bridget, was newly engaged to my husband Nick's brother, Brett.
I remember Augie cracking jokes, treating us like we were now a part of his extended family. He instantly made us feel so welcome. It made us miss our families a little less, since they were on the other side of the country. We shared a lot of laughter that evening. We only wished we lived closer to experience these get togethers more often.
We are thankful to have had the pleasure of knowing him and his larger-than-life personality. He had great character and an even bigger heart. Augie loved his family so very much; it was always a joy to hear stories & witness some in person.
To all of Augie's family:
Those who love us never go away. They fill your spirit, your thoughts, your heart. We hope all of the wonderful memories you shared together can comfort each of you during this time. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to you all. Sending you love & laughter in remembrance of Augie. We are thinking of you as you celebrate and honor Augies' amazing life.

To everyone in the Bertino & Satris families, please accept our condolences on the passing of Augie. We will remember him as a generous, funny and caring gentleman. It brings a smile to our hearts every time we think of him and all his witty remarks. Always ready to lighten the mood he was a memorable individual who everyone enjoyed being with,. All of my children remember him from my younger son’s wedding. His humor was infectious.
God rest Augie, you will keep all rolling in the aisles in heaven!
Jeanne, he will always be watching over you.

I had the pleasure of working with Augie in field sales at Michelin. I loved the unique way he handled both customers and the corporate team back East. He taught me much about the real world of sales in the tire business. He was always the life of any meeting with his great sense of humor and his outlook on life. He had a gift of being able to find the perfect nickname for anyone and I still use some of his nicknames to this day. Augie will be missed by myself and many. Rest in peace my friend !

I had the opportunity to work with Augie at Michelin, meeting him shortly after the merger with Uniroyal and BFGoodrich. Augie was the consummate salesman and combined deep knowledge of his customers with a ready sense of humor and a welcoming heart. We all loved having him around, hearing his stories and also receiving his insight. Through the following years, Augie was among the most popular of attendees at our gatherings and his laugh could always be heard. I am proud to have known Augie personally and was disappointed at his retirement, deserved as it was. I will miss him and I know many, many others will as well. Thank you, Augie, for the memories and for the humor and wisdom you brought to me and to others in our work.
