Betty Voorhees Dunn

Betty was born in Texas City, Texas in 1937 to Edward Drummond Voorhees and Martha Nell, née Lewis Voorhees. She was the eldest of three sisters. She graduated Texas City High School and then attended Texas Christian University (TCU) and The University of Houston. In college she studied business, journalism, art and psychology. She also enjoyed tennis, volleyball and archery. She did many things throughout her long working career. Her first professional job was working at General Dynamics in Fort Worth. She also worked as a legal secretary in Houston and started an insurance audit firm with her first husband, where she managed the financial aspect of the business. She later helped manage a hotel she co-owned in Corpus Christi. After a short position with ATT (formerly Southwestern Bell), she was an executive assistant at Celanese Corporation in Corpus Christi, where she ultimately retired after many years. During this time, she also received her real estate license and was an active agent in the Corpus Christi area. Betty was a passionate volunteer throughout her life, supporting many church activities like teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir. She also served as a United Way volunteer as a loan executive. Following her retirement, her biggest passion was volunteering for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Plano, Texas, where she served more than ten years. She made many friends and helped patients and their families as they went through surgery. Her biggest hobby for most of her life was scuba diving. She received two diving certifications from PADI and SSI, where she was an advanced open water diver, instructor and dive master. She loved teaching people of all ages through the diving experience and had a unique gift in helping many students overcome their initial fear of diving and give them confidence to become successful. She enjoyed many diving excursions with friends and family around the world, primarily in the Caribbean and Hawaii. As her faith was the central focus of her life, she was a proud member of Christ Church Plano where she was a member for many years. She also participated in numerous bible studies where she studied and learned as much as she could about the bible and Christianity. Betty is survived by two children: Kevin McKinney and his wife Karen of Prosper, Texas and DeAnn Holden of Saint Louis, Missouri. She had five grandchildren: Jacob McKinney, Matthew McKinney and Laura McKinney of the DFW area, Caroline Holden and Bethany Holden of Saint Louis. She is survived by one great grandchild, Amelia (Mia) McKinney. She is also survived by her sister, Alice Yanasak of Dickinson, Texas. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents: Edward Drummond Voorhees and Martha Nell Voorhees of Texas City, Texas, and her sister Diane White of Tomball, Texas.
