Obituary of Barbara "Jean" Wallace
(Barbara) Jean Wallace We are sad to announce that Barbara Jean (Whitman) Wallace passed away peacefully at age 90 on February 4, 2019. Jean was born on August 28, 1928 to Lionel Roy Whitman and Abbie Kathleen McConnell in Paradise, N.S., and later the stepdaughter of Muriel Marshall Whitman. She attended Paradise School and Bridgetown High School, where she was valedictorian before heading to Acadia University, residing in Whitman Hall and still fondly remembered her father picking her up at the train station and her mother baking her favorite meals for those weekends at home. After her freshman year, Jean’s mother became ill with cancer so Jean remained at home to care for her until her passing. This experience inspired a move to Halifax where she embarked on a career as a nurse training at the Victoria General in Halifax. It was during this time that, on a double date with her class mate Mary and her beau Tom Davis, that she met her future husband Douglas Wallace, marrying in 1952 . Mary and Tom remained life long friends. Always curious and interested in learning about new things and taking time away from nursing to raise her two children, she began a new career in real estate starting out in sales with Canada Trust in 1967, then manager of its real estate department in 1972 and later receiving her AACI designation from the Appraisal Institute of Canada in 1980 where she worked as an appraiser many years with Pat King and Fram Lay Malay and Associates. Even retirement couldn’t slow Jean down until very recently with her many activities including making new friends until the very end. Few days didn’t include a visit or a walk to see her gang at Tim Horton’s on Quinpool Road from her house of over fifty years on Newton Ave where, when not busy in her garden, she enjoyed socializing with her longtime and very kind “back” neighbor Gloria Haskett. Most recently, Jean has called Parkland At the Lakes home, in Dartmouth and we will always be thankful for the kindness and care of both the staff and her other residents there. Most of all though, and even for all this, to us she was just our wonderful mother who took care of us, raised us, tried to teach us right from wrong by example, always put us first and, simply loved us. As much as we will miss her, we are consoled by how lucky we were to have her to call mum. Jean was predeceased by her husband Doug in 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Saunders (Steve); son Brian ( Adele) of Houston and Chester; grandchildren Sean Saunders( Chelsea), Emma Saunders and Bryan Saunders; and much to her amazement and joy, a great grand-daughter, Hollis Marie Saunders. Memorial service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 10 am from Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax with a reception to follow.
