Dr. Ali Massumi MD

Dr. Ali Massumi, renowned Texas Heart Institute cardiac electrophysiologist, passed away after a protracted battle with cancer at St. Luke’s Hospital on Friday, March 13, 2015 in Houston, Texas at the age of 70. Ali is survived by his wife, Vida; children, Kamron and Mehran, Mehran’s wife Mahsa, grandson Max Ali Massumi, siblings, Soussan Morshedzadeh of Tehran, Iran, Amir Massumi of McLean, VA, Goli Alavi of Isfahan, Iran, and Nazee Banihashemi of Walnut Creek, CA. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Rashideh and Kazem and brother Mohammad. Ali was born on January 15, 1945 in Nain, Iran to Rashideh and Kazem Massumi. He obtained his M.D. from the University of Tehran Medical School in 1971. Ali married the love of his life, Vida, in Iran in 1973. They moved to Buffalo, NY in 1974 where Ali completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Millard Filmore Hospital. Ali and Vida moved to Houston in 1977 to pursue fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at the Texas Heart Institute. Ali joined Hall-Garcia Cardiology Associates in 1979 as a partner and remained there throughout his professional career. Ali was a pioneer in electrophysiology at the Texas Heart Institute and the youngest physician to become full Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Massumi was recognized as a groundbreaking electrophysiologist, always at the forefront of his field; and was consistently named one of the best electrophysiologists in the United States, most recently in 2014 by USA Today. Ali was the personal physician of celebrities, prominent physicians, kings and royal families. The Sultanate of Oman endowed the Massumi Chair in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology at St. Luke’s Hospital in his honor. Dr. Massumi left an indelible legacy as a mentor. He trained more than 30 electrophysiologists and over 180 cardiologists and interventional cardiologists. Ali was a pillar in the Iranian-American community and helped countless people. Ali was a dedicated husband and father, sacrificing everything he had for his family. Ali was known for his wit and the love he had for his friends. The family will receive friends beginning at 1.p.m. with a funeral scheduled to follow at 2p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home located at 13001 Katy Freeway. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ali’s life. The family would like to thank the hospital staff at St. Luke’s Hospital for all of their efforts.
