Obituary of Muriel Ella Lauder
Muriel Ella Lauder (nee Bowman), a long-time resident of Kelowna, died peacefully on Saturday, June 30th, 2018 at Mission Creek Landing two months shy of her 100th birthday surrounded by members of her family. Muriel is predeceased by her loving husband Andrew (Drew) Lauder, her parents Howard and Mildred Bowman and step-mother, Ellen, sister, Helen Lanthier (nee Bowman), brothers Irvin Bowman and Harold Bowman. Muriel will be lovingly remembered by her brother Gordon Bowman, sister-in-law Hazel Bowman, and a generation of nephews and nieces who she spent a lifetime generously supporting and assisting in many ways. Born in 1918 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan she lived in Lake Valley, Saskatchewan for most of her youth and moved to Saskatoon to complete her public education. She relocated to Fort Erie, Ontario and acquired a position with Fleet Aircraft Corporation during World War II. She returned to Saskatoon and attended Scott Business College and took secretarial and bookkeeping courses. Her first job was at the Hudson’s Bay in Saskatoon. She left for Calgary after a few years and got a position with British American Oil Company (BA Oil). Later, she followed her boss to Pacific Petroleums where she worked for several years. She was a founding member of the Desk and Derrick Association of North America where she attended several conferences. She joined Toast Mistresses starting out in community work and achieving counsel chairman covering the Alberta area. Here she was awarded with the Speaker’s Competition Award. Muriel also volunteered for the Canadian Trail Riders Association as Secretary Treasurer where she met her beloved husband Drew Lauder. Drew and Muriel were married on August 15, 1970 at Central United Church in Calgary. Their first home was in Vancouver but moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1972 where they lived until 1987. They then relocated to Kelowna where they eventually retired. Muriel and Drew never ceased to further their knowledge of many subjects through educational courses. During her many years in Kelowna she was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church where she established some wonderful friendships. Her faith was very important to her. The family is sincerely grateful to the staff of Missionwood Retirement Resort and Missioncreek Landing Residential Care Facility located in Kelowna for their care and assistance of Muriel during her stay. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at 2:30 pm at St. Pauls’ United Church (operating out of the 7th Day Adventist Church), 1130 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC.
