Obituary of Rev. Kenneth "Rocky" Munson
Pastor Rocky was born in Seattle, Washington on October 4, 1930. The greatest loss in his life was when his mother died; he was just 9 years old. Rocky's father Reed and his grandmother loved and cared for him very deeply. He met Phyllis in Dayton, Ohio when he was a student at United Theological Seminary. When he and Phyllis were married in 1957 he said he finally felt complete. Pastor Rocky's calling was to search for those who were seeking the Lord, even when they didn't realize it. His dream was to see them in God's arms. He felt called to serve congregations in the inner city, and he was involved with organizations like Urban Christian Ministries and served as a Chaplain at the Buffalo City Mission. He loved the Lord with all his heart, mind, and spirit, and he knew unequivocally that some day he would see the Lord face to face. One of his grandchildren said that Grampie Rocky had a direct line to God, and today we believe he is enjoying that direct line in person. Pastor Rocky will be remembered as "A man with a dream" who is still asking each of us to love the Lord with all our hearts so that we can enjoy being together in God's presence forever. Pastor Rocky and Phyllis were married for 62 years. He is survived by a daughter Laura, son Stephen, and 4 wonderful grandchildren: Leah, Jonas, Isabel, and Caroline. He was predeceased by his beloved son Peter. Rocky was a talented all-around athlete who played tennis, basketball, and softball. He coached countless athletes in basketball and softball church athletic programs in Pittsburgh and Buffalo, many of which he organized and founded. Next to his wife Phyllis, stamp collecting and the San Francisco 49ers were the great loves of his life and he traded and collected stamps and followed his team passionately all his days. Rocky was also known for his gentle, offbeat sense of humor and his knack for nicknaming.
