Obituary of James D. Harrigan
James D. Harrigan "Dude" was born and raised in Blair Township MI, son to Ernest Harrigan and Allene (Blonshine) Powell. Jim served during the Vietnam War with the Marines climbing to the rank of Sergeant and being awarded the 'National Defense Service Medal' and 'Good Conduct Medal' before an honorable discharge. He worked for the Traverse City State Hospital for many years. Following his departure from the State Hospital Jim worked for the United States Postal Service. This job gave Jim the opportunity to give back to his community as a rural driver, checking on the many people on his route who just needed an extra hand. After retiring from the USPS he did the most Jim thing he could do, he got a job helping people. As a Meals on Wheels driver he always went above and beyond to help the clients in any way possible. In addition to the USPS and Meals on Wheels, Jim delivered for the Record Eagle newspaper for 30 years, retiring last December. He was never without a treat in his car for any dogs he may come across, and loved the time he spent with his dog Sadie who passed earlier this year. In his spare time Jim enjoyed the simple things. Spending time with his family, college sports, and animals. Throughout the years the Harrigan household was home to various farm animals, an endeavor his kids referred to as his "Hobby Farm." His favorite college teams were the Florida Gators and Michigan Wolverines, especially the latter, as his granddaughter started there this year as a freshman. Jim is survived by his wife Cathy Harrigan, his children Gayle Gunther, EJ Harrigan, Becky Blake, Erika Harrigan, Ruth Ann Harrigan, and Kelby Harrigan, his eleven grandkids, one great grand daughter and another great-grandchild on the way, many people he considered his kids, his siblings Ron & Bruce Harrigan, Barb Harrigan-Prentice, Ruth Leaym and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Allene Powell, his father Ernest Harrigan, nephews Bryan and Matt, and father and mother in law Doranda and Eloise Crouch. Donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Kingsley Outdoor Education Program.
