Obituary of Elmer Ross Stevenson
Elmer Ross Stevenson, age 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep at 9:55 am on March 6, 2019. Elmer was born June 27, 1930 in Morden, Manitoba to Walter Stevenson and Henrietta Hosea. He was the second of five children; older sister Jean and younger brothers Don, Blaine and Barry. Raised on the family farm, Elmer knew the value of both hard work and collaboration. He carried these skills forward into a proud oilfield career that started on the rigs and ended in the office when he reached retirement. Ever the craftsman, Elmer had a passion for woodwork and created a number of practical and ornamental pieces his family still hold dear today. On June 7, 1958, he married Murial Arlene Brigden and the couple enjoyed over four decades together before she passed away. The pair were inseparable, always off exploring North America in their travel trailer, enjoying golf tournaments with friends and camping in the Rocky Mountains. They gave birth to a beautiful baby girl (Denise Elaine) on April 6, 1961. She was the pride of their lives and in 1972, as she grew closer to her teens, they finally settled down from their follow-the-rig lifestyle in Leduc, AB. When Denise eventually married and had children of her own, both Elmer and Arlene learned the joys of becoming grandparents. They attended all major school events, took the kids on camping adventures and joined the family for every holiday. Even after Arlene’s passing, Elmer continued to figure prominently in his grandchildren’s lives. As his health declined and his place of residence changed, the family returned the favor by visiting him often. He even got to be the recipient of his great-granddaughter Lucy’s very first smile. Elmer was a family-oriented and steadfast soul who prided himself on his ability to take care of those who mattered most to him. He was a devoted husband, proud father and patient grandfather. His bright smile and easy-going nature will be missed by those who knew him. Elmer is survived by siblings Jean Prior and Barry (Tanis) Stevenson, son-in-law Darrell Seib, grandchildren Nicole (Nathan) Froning, Miranda Seib and Nash Seib and great-granddaughter Lucy Froning. He was predeceased by parents Walter Stevenson and Henrietta Hosea, brothers Don Stevenson and Blaine Stevenson, wife Arlene Stevenson and daughter Denise Seib. As per Elmer’s wishes, there will be no formal service held, but a family memorial will be planned for the summer.
