Obituary of Howard Merton Bowes
Howard Bowes of Leduc, Alberta passed away peacefully on June 23, 2018 at the age of 87 and is lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Marilyn, and their three children, Brad, Brenda and Lisa. Howard is survived by two sisters, Eleanor Bracewell (Grant), and Anne Middleton (Clare), and was predeceased by three brothers: David, James (Jim) and William (Bill), who is survived by his wife, Margaret. Howard leaves several nieces and nephews to also mourn his loss. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Ruth Bowes. Howard was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1931. After high school, he followed his older brothers to Ontario to begin his career in the newspaper business. He met Marilyn in Dresden, Ontario, and following their marriage, they moved to Grande Prairie, Alberta to join his brothers and their families in the operation of the local newspaper, the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune. In 1965, Howard and Marilyn moved to Leduc, Alberta and launched their own publishing company, Lynard Publishers Ltd., beginning with the purchase of the local newspaper, the Leduc Representative. Their business grew over the years to include weekly newspapers in seven communities in Alberta. Howard was involved in a number of community initiatives including the Leduc Lions Club and made many life-long friends. Following the sale of their business, Howard and Marilyn spent the winter months in California and Hawaii, enjoying the warmer climate. The family would like to thank the staff at Touchmark at Wedgewood in Edmonton and Lifestyle Options in Leduc for their dedicated care of Howard. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at St. David’s United Church, 4614-48 Street, Leduc, Alberta beginning at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Howard’s memory to the Leduc Community Hospital Foundation (4210 – 48 Street, Leduc, AB T9E 5Z3), the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and NWT at http://www.alzheimer.ca/en/ab, or the charity of one’s choice.
