Obituary of Tyler Keith Welburn

IN THE CARE OF

Lincoln Funeral Home

Tyler Keith Welburn passed away at age 79 on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, of cardiac arrest. He was known for being intelligent, articulate, extremely hard-working, opinionated, and feisty, as well as a caring father, grandfather, and friend. A proud life-long Californian, Ty was born in Oakland. He was able read anything by the age of 4. Ty was an excellent student who loved photography and won a writing scholarship. He graduated from James Lick High School in San Jose. As a teenager, he was a Western Union telegram messenger and eventually worked in its downtown San Jose office, where he met and later married his first wife, Marcia Black. Ty and Marcia had three children together. He took an early programing class at IBM in 1958, and then studied business at San Jose State University, earning his MBA, later adding CDP (Certified Data Processor) to his name. Ty held several corporate jobs, such as Training Director at National Semiconductor in Santa Clara. He also taught while head of the computer science department at West Valley College in Saratoga. In the 1980s, Ty authored Structured COBOL, which quickly became a bestselling college textbook, and another bestseller, Advanced Structured COBOL. Ty founded Convert-It! in Campbell to provide data conversion services around Y2K issues. Intellectually curious, Ty moved to Sacramento and while in his 70s, took design courses at Sacramento State, volunteered at Loaves & Fishes, and pursued his passion for genealogy. Ty is survived by two sons, Brent (wife, Michelle and children Tyler and Madison) and Keith (wife, Annette and children Hannah, Abigail, Sarah, and Noelle). He is preceded in death by daughter Veronica Welburn Aiello (husband, Tony and children Dominic, Marc, and Noah). Tyler was a great man who is greatly missed.
