Eunice Smith

Eunice T. Smith, 91, of Norwich passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at the RHCF of Chenango Memorial Hospital. Eunice was born on September 18, 1927 in Mt. Upton the daughter of Ulyssis and Jennifer (VanKleek) Townsend. She was raised in Mt. Upton where she attended and graduated from the Mt. Upton School. Eunice had 3 children before continuing her education by attending Oneonta State Teachers College where she earned her Master’s Degree. Eunice spent part of her life in the Guilford area where she taught 2nd grade and then kindergarten in the Bainbridge-Guilford Central School from 1963 until her retirement in 1983. During that time Eunice was also an EMT for the Guilford Fire Department. Following her retirement she wintered in Florida for many years with her 2nd husband. Eunice worked for several years with the Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. She volunteered in Norwich as well as in Florida. She was also a member of the Oneonta DAR since October 16, 1971. Eunice was a very goal oriented, independent and strong willed person with a good sense of humor. Her main goal in life was to provide the best she could for her family and to be an excellent homemaker which she did with ease. In her leisure time she would find a good book to read, play pinochle, bridge, backgammon and was an avid NY Yankee Fan. Eunice is survived by her daughter Darlene (Peter) Decker of Watertown, her son Timothy Haynes and companion Sue Wilson of Guilford, step-children Sandra Goodney and Robert Smith, Jr. and his companion Carley Lee, 8 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews along with a sister-in-law Sally Hensley and step-son-in-law Charles Whispell. Eunice was predeceased by her husband’s Hanford Haynes and Robert Smith, her son Robert Haynes, sister’s Esther Heath and Jane Potter, brother Henry Townsend, step-children Carol Whispell and John Goodney. A funeral service for Eunice will be held on Tuesday, July 23, at 11 am from the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rachel Morse, Pastor of the Broad St. United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in the Godfrey Cemetery of Guilford. There will be no calling hours. Following the funeral service there will be a gathering at Park Place Restaurant in Norwich in the back room area.
